GM Files Trademark Application for Velite Name
General Motors (GM) recently filed a new trademark application for the name Velite. The automaker has filed trademark applications for this name several times in the past, but given the current state of the automotive industry, many are wondering if GM has plans for a new EV. As the global climate crisis rages on, automakers like GM have been working toward EVs and hybrids in an attempt to reduce carbon emissions. GM also filed a trademark for the name Electra and as many know, that name will soon follow an all-electric Buick crossover SUV. So, given the recent filing for the name Velite, there’s a lot of speculation that GM could be preparing to release another EV. We’ll dive in further and see what this new name could mean for the automaker.
Potential New EV, Velite Name Trademarked
General Motors (GM) recently filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the name Velite. The application was filed under the goods and services category for motor land vehicles. GM has filed previous trademark applications for this name several times in the past including back in 2012 and 2014. The difference is that today, many automakers, including GM, are working toward EVs and hybrids. GM has highlighted their GMC Hummer EV and though it looks to be a beast of an EV, the automaker wants to make other more conventional EVs.
Alongside this new trademark filing is the Buick Electra crossover. GM recently filed a trademark application for the name Electra and now that name will be used for a new Buick EV. All evidence thus far points toward the Velite name also being used for a new EV. Funny enough, the Velite name has actually already been used in China for two separate Buick PHEV and EV models. The Buick Velite 6 is a plug-in hybrid compact with a 1.5L engine and a 9.5 kWh battery pack. The Buick Velite 7, on the other hand, is an all-electric subcompact crossover that shares GM’s platform with the Chevy Bolt EUV.
We’re not sure which direction GM will head with this new trademark filing, but the consensus is that the automaker will continue to offer EVs and hybrids like the Buick Electra crossover which is set to debut in 2024. For now, we’ll be keeping our eyes and ears open for any signs of a Velite EV.
