Buick was recently rated the best car brand in J.D Power’s Initial Quality Study (IQS). Operating as a leader in consumer behavior, J.D Power utilizes consumer insights and analytical data to gauge consumer sentiment. The company’s Initial Quality Study is conducted annually and provides automakers and manufacturers with insight into how they can better improve their products. Recently Buick was also one of the leading brands in the J.D Power customer satisfaction index. Given its recent success, Buick has been enjoying positive momentum. The automaker has been aiming to move toward electrification, though its combustion engine models have continued to be some of the best vehicles available. We’ll take a look at J.D Power’s IQS and see how Buick fared against its competitors.

Buick Ranks First Among Competitors in IQS

Buick was recently rated as the best car brand in J.D Power’s Initial Quality Study (IQS). Conducted annually, this study is based on responses from customers over a 90-day period. It utilizes a 223-question survey organized into nine separate categories including infotainment, features, controls, exterior, driving assistance, interior, powertrain, seats, driving experience, and climate. As a leading data analytics company, J.D Power uses this consumer data to help automakers and manufacturers improve their products. Based on the recent IQS, the overall automotive industry saw an 11% increase in problems per 100 vehicles.

J.D Power uses several metrics to determine the highest-ranking brands. Buick scored the highest in the 2022 IQS with a score of 139 problems per 100 vehicles. Though this may sound worrying, overall Buick reported the lowest amount of problems, thus topping all other brands surveyed. This was a significant improvement for Buick as just last year in 2021 it scored 12th overall. Most problems that automakers faced this year stemmed from the supply chain issues caused by the global pandemic. Some of these issues included driver assistance problems and infotainment system problems. Many electric and plug-in hybrid owners also reported issues. About the 2022 IQS, J.D Power director of global automotive David Amodeo said,

“Given the many challenges automakers and their dealers had to face in the past year, it’s somewhat surprising that initial quality didn’t fall even more dramatically,” said David Amodeo. “In general, initial quality has shown steady improvement throughout the history of this study, so the decline this year is disappointing—yet understandable. Automakers continue to launch vehicles that are more and more technologically complex in an era in which there have been many shortages of critical components to support them.”
